4 Common Shapes of Dining Tables and Choosing Your Ideal Option

There are several reasons for choosing to buy a new dining table: an expanding family, relocation, and home renovation. In some cases, a homeowner may want a new one because the existing table is somehow grizzled. One important aspect of picking the appropriate table is the shape. Many people may view it as a trivial consideration, but if a shopper wants something that fits squarely into their space, they would want to give the table's shape a lot of thought. Here are four common shapes for dining tables and a few insights into selecting the ideal pick.

A rectangular table is a popular and traditional choice. It's usually available in different materials and finishes. It is easy to work it into a modern setting to create a beautiful and charming space. For a perfect family meal, it's advisable to choose a narrow rectangular table as it keeps people together. Wide options tend to be impersonal and less welcoming. A long, narrow table is also a functional option for homes with large families.

Buyers may want to go for this shape if they occasionally host guests at their house. Oval dining tables lend a sense of occasion to any meal, and it also boasts a luxurious touch. It is thoughtful to pick one that has pedestal legs as this helps to eliminate the leg-banging problem. An oval table lacks sharp corners, meaning it's possible to add in last-minute guests. The curved edges of this table make it a good option for small spaces that also act as thoroughfares. They encourage people to move freely and conveniently.

A round dining table is an ideal choice for a small family, and good options accommodate up to six dining chairs. It offers a setting for useful conversations because it keeps people close. Moreover, this shape is compact, meaning it can easily fit in small spaces. For example, the kitchen area or space in the living room will be a great fit for this table. Round tables that feature a glass tabletop are celebrated picks because they take less visual space.

The downside of a square dining table is that it occupies considerable space, but it's a fitting option that makes conversations easier. If a dining room is large enough, then it makes a reasonable addition. Smaller square dining tables work well for smaller families, but a person may want a larger size if they share the table with guests. For a square table, opting for curved chairs will help complete the look.

When looking at the several dining table shapes, one should try to imagine the look and feel they anticipate. The size of the dining room or space where the table is going to sit should be regarded when choosing the shape. Additionally, a shopper might also want to consider the type and style of dining chairs that suit a particular shape. For example, armless chairs are the standard chair options, but stools also fit oval tables well. Shoppers should take the time to weigh the available options and settle for a shape that enhances their space while making meals more enjoyable.

How To Choose A Perfect Dressing Table

Brief History of Dressing Tables

Dressing tables used to have some aristocracy attached to them. They are also known as vanity tables for the same reason. In the old days, royal women were fond of spending considerable time near a dressing table. Gradually, the dressing tables found their place in every household. Now, it's an essential furniture for every household. This piece of furniture is a nice way to add some glamour into an otherwise dull bedroom. It's like your close companion with whom you spend some time everyday. You need it to fix yourself early in the morning without much clutter or fuss.

If you are looking for great vanity tables, you should keep two things in mind - to suit your taste and meet all the functionality.

Choosing a Perfect Piece

Three things that come first while choosing such a table are: condition of your bedroom, your choice of design, and of course, your budget.

The Space

A dressing table generally finds its place in the bedroom of any general household, but some are installed in a separate dressing room. And the equation changes there; the type of furniture for an exclusive dressing room and a bedroom are somewhat different. Next comes space. Queen Victoria's dressing table, though very elegant, you can't place it to fit in a small space such as a modern apartment. Availability of space and the location is very important for choosing a dressing table. You have to look for the ones that are not very large in size or very elaborate, yet have good finish and functions.

The Condition

If you are going for a luxurious (and expensive) one, you should expect durability of the same. So, the choice of material is very important as the heating and moisture of the bedroom affect the durability of any furniture. Room climate does affect the color, finish and strength of the furniture in the long run. In addition to that, the existing decor of the bedroom plays a role in choosing one type of table over the other. The background and color of your bedroom must match with that of the furniture. Because it's not wise to buy a dressing table first, and then change the home around it. Changing the home is definitely more expensive than changing a piece of furniture.

The Design

By design, here, we'll consider the style, shape, size, color and finish, though design as such doesn't fit to any solid definition. It's as much liquid as the ever-changing trends in fashion. Every design cannot match your requirements. The console, the mirror, the drawers, the lift-up lids, the pedestal and other accessories, all have something special about them - in terms of design. You have to pick one from multitude available types. The material and finish are the final considerations.

Leather And Microfiber Sofas - Which Is Better?

If you are in the market for a sofa, the choices are limitless. Designs have come a long way-and so are the materials they are made of.

Two of today's top choices for sofa fabric are leather and microfiber. While choosing one over the other remains a personal decision, the reasons you will base them from will depend on the type of usage you have planned for the couch.

If you want a sofa that you will love to use everyday, microfiber might be the top choice. Microfiber is basically polyester made from very thin strands. The strands combine to form a suede-like fabric that is very smooth and soft to the touch, not to mention stays relatively cool to the skin even in hot weather. Microfiber also has a good natural ability to repel liquids so maintaining one is not that big of a drawback. However, being porous and absorbent, microfiber needs constant cleaning because it attracts dirt and debris-the same reason it is popular as a cleaner.

On the other hand, leather has been around for ages and has always been associated with luxury. A leather-covered sofa will with no doubt look beautiful with whatever interior theme your house may have. Leather is also very comfortable, but there seems to be a short objective debate on this one. Leather is especially comfortable on cool-weathered places as it takes on the temperature of the atmosphere. For tropical climates, leather can be very hot and make you sweat more-it is non porous and gets sticky in hot climates. As for maintenance issues, with normal use, maintaining leather is as simple as wiping it and using an occasional leather conditioner.

To make decisions easier, microfiber leads the comfort race and leather leads the looks and low-maintenance race. Of course, this is not absolute because both also score some points in the other's strengths. But, the above advantages and disadvantages should easily guide you into ultimately deciding what's right for your home.

Modern Living Room Design Ideas

You've cleared out all the clutter! But what do you do with all of the open space? A living room can feel bland and too open without the proper design ideas. You need some suggestions for giving your important space a more updated look for your family and company.

But first, when should you stay away from a theme? A living room needs to be welcoming for you and your guests. However, if the purpose of decorating is to resell your home, stick with traditional colors and avoid personal accents. More people will be able to visualize it as their own.

Bright colors and artwork spaced properly can give your living room a trendy, metropolitan look. A modern style can be more about aesthetics, how things look, than their actual function. Choose furniture that features simple, curved lines. Carefully select only one or two warm accent colors, so as not to overwhelm the eye. These colors could be featured in items such as throw pillows, lamps, or an area rug.

An American country look can be achieved with exposed brick, warm woods, and pastel colors. Vintage furniture often features rustic, hand-carved detailing. Use pastels or earth tones, and clean lines. Floral or domestic motifs will tie this theme together nicely.

Contemporary styles emphasize both soft colors and textures. Colors are warm, and in the medium -shade range. Pale colors are known to be not as fully relaxing. Textures could include floor tiles and soft sofa fabrics.

The Mediterranean look can be popular and easy to create. Colors will reflect those found in nature, such as sky blue and sea green. Make use of archways and terracotta tiles. Furniture can extend from simple and functional to bronze, wrought-iron, and formal.

Asian styles can include a variety of colors and textures. For Japanese, go for a calm, meditative look. Soft blue, gray, brown, or green will complement subtly used hints of brighter colors and flowers were artwork. Chinese style can be achieved using bold colors such as red or gold to accent dark woods.

Whatever style you choose, pick only one, see it through, and don't go overboard. If the room is not comfortable, it is not livable. Keep your thoughts clear for what the room will be used for. Factor in where the light and space in the room is coming from. Choose one or two choice elements you love, rather than cluttering the room with every piece you like.

If you don't want to invest in a completely new room, you can still change things enough to create a new look. Switch out pillows and pictures every three to six months to reflect the change of season. Change your curtains. Put new slipcovers on an old sofa. Use a wallpaper border instead of painting the whole thing. New lighting fixtures, or even new bulbs, can change the tone of your living room.

Choosing The Perfect Dining Table And Chairs For The Home

In the world of today, decorating has taken on a whole new lease of life. Instead of home owners turning towards interior designers to help furnish their houses, they are choosing to do it themselves. This is largely due to the current economic conditions. Everyone seems to be much more guarded with their money.

Existing home owners are trying to optimize their houses where possible. This is a change from previous conditions, where many would have upgraded to a new house. New home owners obviously need to furnish their houses, however many are choosing to decorate only one room at a time. All home owners want furniture that is high in quality whilst being cost-effective.

Many people do not know where to start without any sort of decorating experience. It is suggested to start by deciding on which room is to be furnished, the essential pieces of furniture required and a budget. It is likely though that some of these decisions will change further down the line.

Room Functionality

Home owners must decide on how their dining rooms will function. Based on this decision, home owners will likely choose to decorate their rooms differently. For example, some people use their dining room as their everyday place to enjoy meals. This room will get a lot of wear and tear. Papers, mail, groceries and coats will be thrown onto the dining table and chairs. On the other hand, although not quite as common today, there are some home owners for whom the dining room is more formal. For them, it is a separate area that is only used for company. A person's best china is used in this room. This room will not get as much use as a less formal dining area so more delicate items can be chosen, rather than opting only for the most sturdy.

Furniture Required

Once it is decided on how the room will function, it will need a dining table and chairs. Home owners may purchase separate pieces such as a table from one collection and chairs from a completely different collection. Likewise, dining room sets are also available where the whole set can be purchased as one item. For people with more confidence in their decorating skills, purchasing separate pieces is fine. However, for those that are not so confident, purchasing a set might be easier. Also, by mixing and matching pieces, the room may have a more eclectic look. On the other hand, purchasing a set may have somewhat of a more formal appearance. Again, this is up to the home owners to decide.

When home owners decide on how they will purchase their dining furniture, by piece or by set, the selection process will begin. Immediately, home owners will notice the huge selection. Starting with the wood, a homeowner can choose from oak, pine or walnut to name but a few. For the dining area, an oak dining table and chairs is highly recommended

Oak is an excellent wood for dining tables and chairs. It is a strong, durable and beautiful material. Oak furniture including an oak dining table can hold up to the demands of daily life or the parties held throughout the year. While oak itself comes in many varieties, the two main ones used for furniture are white oak and red oak. White oak is the one primarily used for furniture since its strength is greater than red oak.

In addition to the colour of the oak, a homeowner can choose to have solid oak dining table and chairs or oak veneer furniture. On the surface, oak veneer furniture may appear to be the better buy, but it is much lower quality. Oak veneer furniture is a combination of solid oak and other type of materials such as plywood or particle board. These materials are pieced together via various methods including glue. Oak veneer furniture's quality and durability is not up to the same standards of solid oak. Solid oak will withstand the test of time and may very likely never need to be replaced. If it is affordable, a solid oak dining table is the way to go. dining room sets, regardless of functionality, need to wear and handle well.

The decision on what to buy is ultimately up to the homeowner. With these few guidelines, it should make the process easier to begin. Home owners can now take pride in decorating their homes themselves.

Consider Four Unique Home Decor Styles

Where we live is a showcase of who we are. Our home reflects our personality, taste and lifestyle and these show through in the style of home décor that we adopt.

There are a wide variety of home decor themes to choose from that are as diverse and unique as we are. Just a few authentic pieces, which can be obtained online are enough to bring out a theme. What we decide to display serves as an aesthetic statement to our guests and create a favorable setting that keeps us feeling at home and comfortable during our waking hours. Here are a few unique home decor styles to consider.

Gothic Decor

Gothic design originated from the medieval period in Europe and is characterized by an ornate yet dark decorative style. Gothic home decor integrates gargoyles, dragons, vampires and other creatures of the night. Although this sounds foreboding, it is a great way to create diversity when blended with other styles. Gothic decor adds a touch of wonder and even whimsy to your decor. Gothic style can be found in lamps, clocks, statues, sculptures, wall and even candle holders. There are artists that specialize in this median and create remarkable looking art.

Egyptian Decor

Egyptian home decor incorporates the bold designs, intricate patterns, and ornate sculptures from Egyptian antiquities. Rich colors such as gold, bronze and turquoise dominate the Egyptian palette. Depending on your budget, Egyptian decor can consist of antiques or faithful reproductions. Statues and sculptures of Egyptian deities are common. Egyptian style candle holders, urns, vases, mirrors and other home accent pieces are quite striking.

Asian Decor

The Asian style of home decorating incorporates design elements from Japan, China, Thailand, and Indonesia. Using any one influence could suffice although combining different design traditions creates a richer texture. The colors red, black, and gold are typically used. Asian decor often includes depictions of the Buddha and of the indomitable Asian dragon.

African Decor

African decor is not particularly colorful but it is very interesting. The African theme draws its inspiration from nature. Its main distinguishing feature is the use of the continent's cultural symbols and patterns. They are present in everything from woven decorative fabrics with tribal motifs to exotic art and craft pieces. African decor consists of tribal masks, sculptures and vases. The colors used are natural earth and rainbow hues.

How To Create A Vintage Style Home Decor

Vintage style is most definitely a buzz right now with many on trend homes embracing a modern vintage theme. Old school glamour and rustic quirky furniture encapsulates all that we love about vintage style. Although vintage style may seem costly it's not all about searching for those one off unique crafted pieces. Vintage can be achieved with carefully selected furniture both large and small along with the right accessories. Be as creative and imaginative as you like when selecting your vintage pieces this will allow you to create a truly unique design in your home. If you're sold on the idea of a vintage style home read on to check out our simple tips on ways to introduce a vintage theme into your home.

Statement wallpaper

When creating your vintage style its best to create a specific focal point in your room wherever that may be so you don't overpower the entire space. Wallpaper is a great way to easily create a feature and can create a fun, striking look without being overbearing. Opt for patterned wallpaper such as a shabby chic floral print or a 70's geo metric style to create the perfect vibe. Geo prints or even tartan are great if you're after a retro vibe these wallpaper are often the perfect way to inject some colour into your room also. There's also the option of going for a printed wallpaper such as an animal print instantly adding interest to your wall.

Rustic Furniture

Rustic style furniture is the ultimate in vintage styling. Exposed brickwork and natural wooden beams are a desirable look that many of us wish we had unfortunately we're not all lucky enough to enjoy the luxury of these natural features. However all is not lost as there are many ways to include rustic pieces with fairly minimal effort. Wooden shelving and plaques or distressed units have a very similar effect without having to make any drastic changes. Allow these pieces to truly stand out by adding subtle accessories around them and position them against a natural wash wall. Ensure the room receives lots of light and instantly you will feel a vintage vibe with the illusion of very minimal effort.

We believe no room is complete without the addition of a mirror. If you're looking to create a vintage feel a specific kind of mirror should be used. There are 2 specific types of mirrors that can be used to create a charming vintage feel. The first is more of an elegant vintage style; think elaborate frames and lavish ornate detailing. However if this is too overpowering you can always go down the route of a more subtle vintage feel such as wooden distressed frames and natural pale colours. Whichever style you select if you piece with other vintage accessories or even on a quirky wallpapered wall a mirror will increase light and space and complement the overall feel of your living space.

Every room requires subtle accessories which help tie the design together. When considering vintage accessories think outside the box. Quirky pieces such as a lamp or even a patterned cushion can all add pops of style to your living space. If you're into DIY you can even create the accessories yourself. Choose some retro fabric and craft your own cushion, pillow case or throw for your living room or bedroom. Consider everything even down to the smallest items such as your tea cups and lamp shades. Switching up your lamp shade to a striking geo metric print or adding a new retro cup to your dining room table set can all contribute to the vintage vibe. Whatever accessories you choose continuing the theme throughout your room will gradually create the vintage feel you're after.

Promote Good Health and Positive Energy Flow in Your Home

Feng Shui Architecture
Feng Shui home decorating has become a popular technique in the modern world. Although this practice is centuries old, many people turn to it to optimize their homes for personal growth and well being. You can either alter an existing home, or if you plan to build a home, make a point to do so with Feng Shui home decorating in mind. By using the right layout, you can create a private space that promotes good health and positive energy.

Plan Each Room
Position is everything in Feng Shui design. If possible, this should be taken into consideration before your home is built. Long before you worry about Feng Shui home decorating, consider where each room will be placed. A Lou Pan, or Chinese compass, is often used to determine the best location for each room in the home. This compass determines the direction of qi flow. Even if you do not have a Lou Pan, you can use a traditional compass much the same way.

These tools are used with the Eight House theory as well as the Flying School theory. The Eight House theory is used as a general guide and incorporates the compass direction and the person's birth date to determine the best layout. The Flying School theory provides more detailed information and is generally used after the preliminary Eight House reading.

Ceiling Height
Ceiling height comes into play with Feng Shui home decorating. Although a high ceiling may create a feeling of openness, this design choice is not recommended for all rooms. Some rooms, such as sleeping areas, are intended to feel more intimate and cozy. In these areas, avoid high ceilings. Exposed beams are also considered a poor choice in Feng Shui home decorating. It is believed that the visibility of a beam can lead to a poor flow of qi which can result in relationship and health issues.

Shape and Focus
Most home designs feature square and rectangular rooms. Although this sounds common, it is actually an idea shape for the flow of qi. When an oddly shaped space is incorporated into a house design, the qi will not flow evenly. This cannot be compensated for with Feng Shui home decorating. The uneven flow can create a lack of focus in the room, which can lead to many other problems in the inhabitant's life.

Another similar problem involves circular staircases and other unique designs. Much like an oddly shaped room will cause qi to bounce and flow improperly; a circular staircase will cause it to spiral. However, this can actually prove beneficial if correctly place. Make a point to position circular staircases near a positive source in the home. This will distribute the positive energy throughout the area. When the staircase is placed near a negative source, then the negative energy is instead distributed. This can have a severe impact on all Feng Shui home decorating in the living space.

These are just a few of the Feng Shui home decorating techniques that will help you optimize positive energy flow in your home. Next you need to consider what type of furniture you will want to put in your home and that will be covered in a future article. Remember; Feng Shui home decorating focuses on harmony and position. A well designed home can result in a pleasant environment that nurtures positive energy and happiness.

Accessorizing And Decorating Your Home Theater

So, you've bought the big screen TV, the surround sound speakers and various home theater equipment and you have them installed and ready to go. But what's missing?

If you're installing a home theater, you need to think beyond the system components and consider the furniture and accessories you want to add to the room to create a really cool environment for your entertainment pleasure.

Just like decorating any other room, the accessories are what will make your home theater stand out from the crowd. Here's some things to think about when considering your home theater decor:

1. Think about what kind of look you want in your home theater. If the room is a dedicated home theater, you can pretty much pick whatever look you want. If you want to go with a movie theme, you can do that. If you want Old World elegant with a big screen and speakers thrown in, you can do that too. If the room is serving a double purpose, such as an office/home theater or living room/home theater, then you need to keep that in mind when decorating. Most people wouldn't want giant, framed movie posters for horror flicks within eyesight of their dining room. And if the room is also used for children's play, safety considerations might dictate decorating.

2. Choose your theme first - maybe you already have a collection of old movie posters and you want to work around that. Or perhaps, you always wanted an indoor garden of sorts. Either way, picking your theme should be the first thing you do before you rush out to the store to buy accessories. Knowing the theme in advance will help guide the rest of your decisions from colors and wall hangings to furniture and lighting.

3. Start a collection. A popular theme for decorating home theaters is to fill it with old movie memorabilia. This can be really fun to collect and it could even be considered an investment as the items you use may well go up in value. Some things you can collect for your home theater include: movie posters, autographed photos of movie stars, an old fashioned movie popcorn maker, movie props and other memorabilia from old movie ticket stubs to real movie theater seats. One thing to keep in mind when collecting anything is that condition is of the utmost importance so buy the best condition items you can afford. It is better to get 1 item in excellent condition, then to get 10 that are in fair condition.

4. Don't forget the rooms real purpose when selecting furniture and lighting. Make sure lighting enhances the movie experience. If the room is used for another purpose too, think about a combination of lights to make it work for both instances. Low lighting is ideal for movies, but it's not so hot for kids trying to do homework on a coffee table. You also want your furniture to be of the utmost in comfort. It wouldn't be much fun to watch a movie on your expensive new home theater system if you are not comfortable, would it? Luckily, with the selections today, you can get both comfort and style in your home theater furniture.

5. Make your home theater feng shui friendly. Keeping some basic principals of feng shui in mind when designing your room can help you attain a relaxing atmosphere. Don't put seating with the backs to the doors. Try to set the room up with a nice flow and workable space for walking. Don't try to cram things into the room that won't fit properly. Make sure to keep your home theater organized, a room that is filled with piles of junk and a mess will not create a relaxing atmosphere. Instead, it will serve to remind viewers who live in the home of any and all work and projects they need to do. Keep the room decorated and nice, but don't over pack it with junk. Make sure you hide the wires and have plenty of storage cabinets to put your DVD's in.
